Monsoon returns with vengeance to coast, Malnad

After a brief lull, monsoon has returned with vengeance in coast and Malnad. The regions have been receiving heavy showers since Friday night.

The rain fury has prompted the district administrations of Kodagu and Dakshina Kannada to declare holiday for schools and colleges. While Kodagu district administration has declared holiday for educational institutions in the entire district, the Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner has declared holiday for schools and colleges in Sullia, Belthangady taluks and in Moodbidri.

The water level in Netravathi has increased drastically owing to incessant rain. The water level in the river stood at 26.5 metre in Uppinangadi as against the maximum of 28 metre.

An elderly woman and her grandson were killed after a compound wall, weakened by the damp weather collapsed on them at Hebbarbail in Puttur town on late Friday night.

The Fire personnel and the emergency crew rescued 18 people stranded after the overflowing Nandini river flooded houses at Shibaruru and Soorinje. The emergency crew evacuated the people, in boats, who were waiting for help on the rooftops of their houses.

Showers continued to batter Kodagu district. The water level in Cauvery has increased following the unrelenting showers in Napoklu, Bhagamandala and Talacauvery region. Rain coupled with strong winds, has brought down many electricity poles, severely affecting power supply to several villages near Suntikoppa.

Incessant rain in Udupi district in the last 24 hours has flooded many areas. Karavali Junction in Udupi town is inundated with rainwater, causing grave hardships to the motorists.

Though Udupi DC has not declared a holiday for schools and colleges, the officer has suggested the school and college administrations to take a call on declaring a holiday to their institutions.

River Tunga has swollen owing to heavy rain in Chikkamagaluru district.

Heavy showers, accompanied by high-intensity winds, continue to lash Uttara Kannada district. The intensity of showers is high in Bhatkal and Honnavar taluks. Sirsi and Siddapur taluks are also experiencing downpour.

According to the Met department, the showers will continue to hit the coastal districts of Karnataka and Goa for next three days.
