<p>The Anti Naxal Force (ANF) has taken up ‘Operation Black Thunder’ to counter naxal activities in Western Ghats.<br /><br />The title ‘Operation Black Thunder’ was first used in 1986 to bring out the hiding Sikh terrorists inside Golden Temple in Amrithsar. It is said that the other operations conducted by BSF and NSG with same title have been succeeded. <br /><br />Hence, the State top police officials too have decided to name the operation against naxals as ‘Operation Black Thunder,’ according to police sources.<br /><br />Though the police have been trying hard to free the Western Ghats from naxals for the last one decade, the police have not succeeded in completely eliminating the naxals from the region.<br /><br />As the police have received clues on naxals gaining ground in Western Ghats again in the recent past, the police have intensified their opeations against naxals.<br /><br />It is said that the ‘Operation Black Thunder’ has been started with an aim to listen to the woes of people in naxal infested region, try to find a solution to their problems and also reach an logical end by eliminating the naxal menace. <br /><br />The operation is likely to be continued till August 28, according to reliable sources in the police department.<br /><br />Public meet<br /><br />Along with the operation, plans are also on the anvil to visit the people in the naxal infested region, listen to their woes and try to find a solution for the same. <br /><br />As per the directions of the top police officials, it is planned to organise village-level meetings in 8 police station jurisdictions including Sringeri, Hariharapura, Koppa, Balehonnur, Jayapura, Kalasa and Kudremukh.<br /><br />After organising the meets, a report will be submitted, that is, suppose to include the solutions to the problems too. It is said that the police department has come to a conclusion that the naxal menace can not be solved if only operations against naxal is undertaken. <br /><br />Hence, the department has preparing a comprehensive plan that includes solutions to burning problems in the naxal region.<br /><br />It may be recalled that there was good response to such meetings in village-level when Vipul Kumar was the superintendent of police in Chikmagalur. Hence, the department has planned to organise such meetings again, it is said.<br /><br />A meeting in this regard has been held in Sringeri under the leadership of IGP (Western Range) Alok Mohan and superintendents of police from Chikmagalur, Udupi and Shimoga have taken part.</p>
