Raitha Sangha opposes illegal quarrying

Last Updated 23 March 2013, 20:18 IST

Members of the Rajya Raitha Sangha and Hasiru Sene staged a dharna in front of the deputy commissioner’s office in the City on Friday, urging the Government to meet their various demands.

The members were demanding the Government to check on illegal stone and sand quarrying in the district, conservation of natural resources and seeking solution to the drinking water problem that had been prevailing in the district for a long time.
The members urged that some vested interests were plundering the natural resources unabatedly. Through illegal stone and sand quarrying, the country’s rich resources were being utilised for the selfish needs of the mankind. Until and unless some stringent measures were implemented to stop such acts, the national wealth would be completely exhausted, they said.
Diminishing hills
Addressing the members, district unit president of the Sangha B H Narasimhappa said the mountains and hillocks were fast diminishing and the lakes and ponds were on the verge of extinction.
The ecological balance was at stake and it was taking a toll on the environment. The district administration should take action against such violators of law and ensure that such incidents did not repeat in future, he added.
