Retain three-language formula: Horatti writes to CM Siddaramaiah

Amid debate over whether or not Karnataka should opt for a two-language policy in education, Legislative Council Chairman Basavaraj Horatti has batted for the existing three-language formula.

In a letter addressed to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, School Education and Literacy Minister Madhu Bangarappa, Chief Secretary Shalini Rajaneesh, and officers, Horatti recalled that the Kothari Commission had considered the three-language formula as a key policy to promote multilingualism and national integration.

Horatti opined that the marks secured by students Hindi help them
improve their overall performance in results, while the two-language policy would be detrimental for around 15,000 Hindi teachers in government and aided high schools.

Horatti, who has been an MLC representing teachers since 45 years continuously, stated that two-language policy may trouble communication due to lack of knowledge of languages.

“Future generations should not deprived of opportunities. More than 17,909 students had scored 100 marks out of 100 Hindi in SSLC examinations which is the maximum among all the subjects,” he added.
