Salary hike takes Karnataka CM, MLAs' incomes to 5th rank: Which states pay higher?

Despite the 100 per cent hike, Siddaramaiah and the MLAs of Karnataka will earn less than four other compatriot states' lawmakers.

The Karnataka Assembly on Friday passed Bills giving a 100 per cent salary hike to the chief minister and all lawmakers.

However, despite this hike, Siddaramaiah and the MLAs of Karnataka will earn less than four other states' lawmakers.

Here are the five states which pay the highest to Chief Ministers and MLAs:

Telangana

Chief Minister's salary - Rs 4.10 lakh per month, including allowances for housing, travel, and security.

Minister's salary - Rs 3–3.5 lakh

MLA's salary - Rs 2.5 lakh

Delhi

Chief Minister's salary - Rs 3.90 lakh

Minister's salary - Rs 3 lakh

MLA's salary - Rs 90,000

Uttar Pradesh

Chief Minister's salary - Rs 3.65 lakh

Minister's salary - Rs 2–2.5 lakh

MLA's salary - Rs 1.87 lakh

Maharashtra

Chief Minister's salary - Rs 3.40 lakh

Minister's salary - Rs 2.5–3 lakh

MLA's salary - Rs 1.60 lakh

Karnataka (post hike)

Chief Minister's salary -Rs 3 lakh

Minister's salary - Rs 2–2.5 lakh

MLA's salary - Rs 1.60 lakh

These salary include allowances for housing, travel, security area allowances and medical benefits, along with pay per day to attend Assembly sessions. The number and type of allowances vary from state to state.

Siddarmaiah's salary excluding allowances would be Rs 1.5 lakh (post hike). The various allowances add up to make the total Rs 3 lakh per month.

Similarly, the MLAs will earn Rs 1.25 lakh per month, and receive area allowances of Rs 25,000, travel allowances of Rs 35 per km, and Rs 2,500 per day during assembly sessions.

Additionally, they are also allocated Rs 2 crore annually for constituency development.

The Karnataka Ministers Salaries and Allowances (Amendment) Bill and the Karnataka Legislature Salaries, Pensions and Allowances (Amendment) Bill were passed in the Assembly without any debate, amid protests by the Opposition BJP whose members were in the well of the House.

“There is a considerable increase in the cost of living. The salary and allowances to the CM, ministers, ministers of state and deputy ministers have not been revised since a long time,” the Bill stated.
