Sharanas had fought for equality to women, says seer

Sharanas had played a pivotal role in providing equality to women in society in the 12th century, said Basavapattana Thontadarya Samsthana Mutt seer Sri Swathantra Basavalinga Swami.

He was speaking at a district-level convention on 'Feminine Identity and Revolution in Vachanas' organised by Akhila Bharatha Sharana Sahitya Parishat, Zilla Sharana Sahitya Parishat, Kadali Mahila Vedike, Sri Mantigappa Sevasthana Samithi, Akkamahadevi Mahila Samaja, Sthree Shakthi Sangha here at Shirangala Umamaheshwari Temple premises on Saturday.

"Women have been given equal status in the society. However, it is a tragedy that there is a section in society who still discriminate against women," he added.

Sharanas and Basavanna had given equal status for women at Anubhava Mantapa. Through Vachanas, they fought against inequality and superstitious beliefs.

Kodlipete Kirikodli Mutt seer Sri Sadashiva Swami called upon parents to educate their children.

"Children should consider their parents as models rather than cricketers and cine stars. Women should be empowered through knowledge and awareness and thereby lead a life of dignity."

ZP vice president Lokeshwari Gopal also spoke on the occasion.
