<p>Shivamooga: Works related to the night flight operations at the Shivamogga airport are on the verge of completion after a gap of several months. The Public Works Department are executing the works at a cost of Rs 8 crore.</p><p>The officials of Karnataka State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (KSIIDC) are making necessary arrangements to submit a proposal to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to inspect the night landing facilities.</p><p>As of now, flights are operated between 9:50 am and 6:00 pm. Post-inspection, the DGCA will decide whether operating flights from Shivamogga Airport after 6:00 pm must be approved but the authorities are confident of getting a nod. </p><p>However, there are many challenges before KSIIDC to commence the night flight operations.</p><p><strong>Major challenge</strong></p><p>Sources in Shivamogga Airport stated that currently, over 300 persons are employed in various sections of the airport. The manpower may have to be increased if night flight operations are commenced. Also, the cost of electricity and maintaining security and housekeeping staff will escalate.</p><p> The state government has to chalk out the period of night flight operations. Soon, issues related to the timings of the night flight operation and flights that can use the facility will be discussed at the KSIIDC meeting.</p><p>Speaking to DH, Shivamogga airport officials said night landing facilities can be used if the visibility is low due to fog. So the facilities are not meant only for flights that operate during the night. </p><p>He also pointed out that the number of arrivals and departures is considered while counting the flight operations. Going by this, flight operations here stand at 12 as of now. It is likely to increase if night flight operations commence.</p><p><strong>Current operations</strong></p><p>Currently, Spicejet leaves Chennai, arrives at Shivamogga, then flies to Hyderabad, returns to Shivamogga and returns to Chennai. The flight is based in Chennai.</p><p>Star Air based in Hyderabad will arrive in Shivamogga, fly to Goa, return to Shivamogga, fly to Tirupathi, return to Shivamogga and then fly back to Hyderabad. </p><p>Indigo Airlines is operating a flight service between Bengaluru and Shivamogga. All these flights are being operated on a daily basis.</p>
