Strike: VTU exams put off

The two-day nationwide strike called by trade unions, that began on Wednesday, evoked a mixed response in the State. Schools and colleges, along with business establishments, remained closed in some places.

The Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) has postponed the MTech, MBA and MCA exams, scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday (February 20 and 21).

The decision to put off the examinations was taken at an emergency meeting of the university held by Vice -Chancellor H Maheshappa and registrar (evaluation) H G Shekharappa on Wednesday.

The MTech 2012, MTech 2011, MBA 2011 and MBA 2009 exams, scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, have been postponed to 2 pm on February 27. The MCA 2012 exam scheduled on that day has been put off to 2 pm on March 1.

The MTech 2012 exam, scheduled for Thursday, will now be held at 2 pm on March 1, Shekharappa told Deccan Herald.

While the strike received good response in Hyderabad-Karnataka, Bellary and Bagalkot districts of north Karnataka while it was a mixed response in central Karnataka districts of Shimoga, Chitradurga and Davangere as well as coastal Karnataka districts of Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and neighbouring Chikmagalur.

Old Mysore regions, comprising Mysore, Hassan and Chamarajanagar, it was a partial response. No untoward incidents were reported from any parts of the State. As buses and auto rickshaws remained off roads in most of these places, causing incovenience to passengers. However, in areas such as Chamarajangar, where the strike was not observed, buses and autos plied as usual. Schools and colleges functioned normally.
