Addressing a press meet here on Wednesday, Association President Suresh said that tender was not called for auctioning sand in the month of May. As a result, the lorry owners are in distress. Sand mining is being carried out illegally on the banks of the river in the district.

Owing to the failure of the government to invite tenders, illegal sand mining is being carried out unabated in the district. Sand is being illegally transported from the district, he added.

“Owing to the failure on the part of the government to call for tender, sand is not available for the construction works in the district. Many of the buildings have remained half complete, causing loss to the government as well as the contractors.

For getting sand from other districts, one has to pay double the amount. As a result, poor are not able to construct houses,” he added.

He said “sand mining can be undertaken only for four months in the district. Owing to the non-availability of the sand, development works have remained stagnant. In spite of illegal transportation of sand, district administration is sitting quiet.”
