Voters here have to walk 6 km to the booth

Voters in Vyasanakere in the taluk are a much-ignored lot, one may say. Not only do they have to trudge six km to exercise their franchise, but also parties and candidates are not bothered much if they choose to skip voting.

For decades, they have been demanding that a polling station be set up in their village whenever elections are held. But their plea to officials and people’s representatives have fallen on deaf ears.

This non-descript village, with a voter count of 203 and coming under Vijayanagar constituency, is eight km from the city and the Hosapete-Chitradurga national highway-50 passes through it.

The people here have to walk all the way to the election booth at Rajapura. While workers of parties arrange for vehicles to take some voters to the booth, the others are not so lucky. So they choose not to vote, said Ramanjinappa, a resident.

The village is deprived of a good tarred road and lorries carrying iron ore to the Vyasanakere railway station raise lot of dust, much to the discomfort of the residents.

The people say there is hardly any benefit in walking the distance and voting.
