<p>Bengaluru: In a major escalation with Goa, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister <a href="https://www.deccanherald.com/tags/d-k-shivakumar">D K Shivakumar</a> announced on Thursday that Karnataka would start work on the Mahadayi project. </p><p>Shivakumar, the water resources minister, was reacting to Goa Chief Minister <a href="https://www.deccanherald.com/india/karnataka/goa-cms-remarks-an-insult-to-the-people-of-karnataka-siddu-3645246">Pramod Sawant's reported statement</a> that the union government would not permit the Mahadayi project. </p><p>"We will withdraw our application from the Supreme Court and start the work. I will see who stops it,” Shivakumar said.</p><p>Amid opposition from Goa, Karnataka wants to use the Mahadayi river water from its tributaries Kalasa and Banduri to the drought-hit districts of north Karnataka. The state will use 3.9 tmc ft of water - 2.18 tmc ft from Banduri and 1.72 tmc ft from Kalasa river canals - for drinking water purposes. </p>.Inspired by 1980 revolt, Mahadayi protests continue after 10 years.<p>In its August 2018 award, which the Centre notified in February 2020, the Mahadayi tribunal allocated 13.42 tmc ft of water to Karnataka, which includes 5.4 tmc ft for consumptive use. Now estimated to cost Rs 1,677 crore, Karnataka is awaiting environmental clearance from the union government to start work.</p><p>"The Goa CM has lost his mental balance. He doesn't respect the federal system. The Tribunal has given its verdict on Mahadayi and we have already floated a tender," Shivakumar said. </p><p>He said BJP leaders, including former chief minister Basavaraj Bommai and Union Minister Pralhad Joshi had claimed that the Mahadayi project would take off soon based on the promise of approval by the Centre.</p>.My case is an example of misuse of ED, says Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar.<p>"I will meet all the MPs from the state and seek their support. This is a matter of self-respect. It is wrong on the part of the state MPs not to raise their voice on this issue. We can’t sell our state just for one MP from Goa. I will try to take an all-party delegation to Delhi,” Shivakumar said. </p><p>Shivakumar said Union Jal Shakti Minister C R Patil is "impartial" on the matter. </p><p>"He won't do politics in this. I've met him 4-5 times. The union environment minister will also not do politics. Both of them support development works. The issue is with Goa," he said. </p>
