Worker taking shelter in public toilet rescued

A worker who had taken refuge in a public toilet on the Gandhi Maidan for three days was rescued by Fire Brigade and ANF staff member Mahesh on Thursday.

Vinod Mandle, who is a native of Bihar, was unable to meet the challenge of the floods on the Tunga river. As a last resort to save himself, he had come to the Gandhi Maidan. The public toilet on the Maidan has been constructed on a considerably tall structure. Mandle had stayed in the public toilet for three days to escape the fury of the floods.

About four days ago, the incessant rain had raised the water level in River Tunga.

In the hope that the level would fall in a couple of hours, Mandle had taken refuge in the toilet. By the end of the same day, however, the rainwater rose beyond 15 feet around the construction, marooning the toilet.

The floods continued for more than two days and the rainwater level too rose by the day.

Frightened by this, Mandle shouted for rescue, but was too far from the mainland to be heard. Nobody naturally came to his rescue.

On Thursday, however, the people who noticed Mandle stuck in the toilet building, informed the ANF. Mahesh, along with the Fire Brigade staff members, went to the toilet building in a boat and brought Mandle to safe shores.
