<p>Thiruvananthapuram: The CPM has decided to field party young leader M Swaraj as Left Democratic Front candidate for the June 19 by-poll to the Nilambur assembly seat in Malappuram district.</p><p>A native of Nilambur, 46 year old Swaraj is a state secretariat member of the CPM and was a MLA from Thripunithura in Kochi in 2016. He lost the Tripunithura seat in 2021 by a narrow margin of 1,232 votes.</p><p>The CPM was learnt to have zeroed in on Swaraj after considering some independent candidates and even some dissident leaders from the Congress camps. Swaraj was finalized as he is a native of Nilambur.</p><p>Swaraj will be taking on Aryadan Shoukath of the Congress. He is the son of Congress leader late Aryadan Mohammed, who was Nilambur MLA for nearly three decades from 1987 to 2016.</p>.Bihar BJP leaders get victory mantra from PM Modi on upcoming polls.<p>CPM state secretary M V Govindan said that the party would be giving a strong political fight by fielding young leader Swaraj. </p><p>The Nilambur by-poll is being considered as a semi-finals of the 2026 assembly elections that is less than a year away. The CPM has already unleashed a campaign that the party will come to power for a third term in a row under the leadership of Pinarayi Vijayan. Anvar quit the MLA post in January owing to differences with Pinarayi Vijayan and hence the by-poll is being held.</p><p>Meanwhile, a decision on Anvar, who is now with the Trinamool Congress, associating with the Congress-led UDF is still pending. </p><p>The BJP-led NDA is yet to announce candidate for the by-poll which is the first election in Kerala after Rajeev Chandrasekhar took over as BJP state president.</p>
