<p>Thiruvananthapuram: A 38 year old woman in Kerala was tested positive for Nipah, while an 18 year old girl who died following acute encephalitis syndrome two days back was also suspected to be infected with Nipah.</p><p>The woman hailing from Palakkad earlier tested positive for Nipah in preliminary tests conducted in Kerala. Further tests conducted at National Institute of Virology in Pune also confirmed the infection. She is now under treatment in Palakkad and steps to administer monoclonal antibody treatment were being taken.</p><p>The 18-year-old girl hailing from Malappuram, died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Kozhikode. Preliminary tests found that she was infected with Nipah. A confirmation from NIV, Pune is still awaited. </p>.Suspected Nipah case reported in Kerala.<p>Health minister Veena George said that an alert was sounded in Palakkad, Malappuram and Kozhikode districts. A total of 345 persons are found to be in the contact lists of the infected. Doctors and nurses are among those in the contact list. Route maps of the infected were being published.</p><p>The health department has initiated steps to screen those who came in contact with the two persons. As many as 26 special teams were formed in Palakkad, Malappuram and Kozhikode districts. </p><p>Three kilometer radius of the residence of the 38-year-old woman hailing from Thachanattukara in Palakkad was declared as containment zone. Schools and worship centres in the locality were advised to remain closed.</p><p>The women took treatment following fever and breathing difficulties. Both the patients started showing illness from June 25 and 26.</p><p>The minister also said that efforts to trace the sources of infection were going on. Experts have advised the people not to chase away fruit bats by bursting crackers of other methods.</p><p>Nipah is being reported quite frequently in Kerala ever since a major outbreak in 2018 that claimed 18 lives in Kozhikode.</p><p>In May this year a 42 year old woman was tested positive for Nipah in Malappuram district of Kerala.</p><p>Last year a 14 year old boy hailing from Malappuram and a 24 year old youth studying in Bengaluru, who also hailed from Malappuram, died due to the infection. In 2023 out of the six infected two died and in 2021 one person died due to Nipah. Though one person was infected in 2019, he recovered.</p><p>Nipah virus, which is one of the ten priority pathogens identified by the World Health Organisation, is a highly pathogenic paramyxovirus.</p>
