A sea of humanity poured in the Shirur tehsil of Pune district on Tuesday to pay respects to the victory pillar on the occasion of the 201st anniversary of Koregaon Bhima war.
Amidst tight security arrangements, lakhs of people, mainly from the SC community and Ambedkarites marched to the 'Jay stambh' to pay respect to the Mahar caste soldiers of the Bombay Native Infantry.
Last year, during the 200th-anniversary celebrations, caste violence broke out leading to one death and extensive damage to property.
On Tuesday, over 8,000 police, traffic and civic officials ensured that everything was smooth.
Among those who paid tribute include, Bharipa Bahujan Mahasangh founder-president Prakash Ambedkar, the grandson of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar.
