Ramsetu bridge in Ajmer, built with over Rs 200 crore 3 years ago, shut due to 'structural damage'

In Rajasthan, a bridge built at the cost of Rs 243 crore was shut down for the public after there were significant damages observed on the construction. A court ordered a probe into the Ajmer bridge case, noting that it was built only three years ago with a huge budget. It was damaged after rainfall hit the region earlier this July.

The news about the Ramsetu bridge of Ajmer comes about 24 hours after the country witnessed a tragic incident in the neighbouring state of Gujarat, where a bridge dramatically collapsed and killed at least 17 people.

In a recent session, a local court ordered the four-lane Ramsetu bridge in Ajmer to be closed. The Additional Civil Judge and Judicial Magistrate of Ajmer court, Manmohan Chandel, ordered the bridge's closure.

Visuals from the site were posted online by locals and other netizens. They showed the dilapidated condition of the structure that ran around 2.6 kilometres.

As this bridge was used by many citizens, its closure resulted in traffic in adjacent areas.

Following the court order, the traffic was diverted to other routes. A report in the Times of India reported that the shutting down of the bridge resulted in jams, especially during peak hours, on Agra Gate, Kachari Road and Station Road.

The news outlet also reported that the heavy and early monsoon in Ajmer resulted in another incident in the region, where a small bridge in Varuna Sagar, connecting the Defence Colony at Foy Sagar Road from the main city, got broken.
