1954

Manmohan Singh completed his Master's in Economics from Panjab University.

1957

Manmohan Singh completed a 3 year-degree programme in Economics from Cambridge University, The programme was known as Economics Tripos.

1962

He earned a D Phil in economics from Oxford University.

1971

In 1971, Singh joined the Government of India as an economic advisor in commerce ministry.

1972

He worked his way up and was appointed the Chief Economic Advisor in finance ministry in 1972.

1980-82

He was a member of the Planning Commission.

1982-1985

He served as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) during the 1980s.

1985-87

Singh also served as the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission.

1987-90

Manmohan Singh was appointed as the Secretary General of the South Commission in Geneva

1990

In 1990, Manmohan Singh was appointed as the advisor on economic affairs to the then Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar.

1991

In 1991, Singh was appointed the chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Singh was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Assam in 1991 and re-elected in 1995, 2001, 2007 and 2013.

1991-1996

In 1991, Singh was appointed as the Finance Minister under the leadership of the then Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao.

1998-2004

From 1998, Singh was the Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha.

2004-2014

After the UPA (United Progressive Alliance) alliance won elections in 2004, Manmohan Singh became the Prime Minister of India, serving the country for two terms until 2014.
