People across Tamil Nadu on Sunday welcomed the Tamil New Year ‘Vijaya’ with the beginning of the Tamil month ‘Chithirai.’

People exchanged pleasantries and visited temples to pray for a fruitful year ahead even as the festival was welcomed with platter of mouth-watering delicacies in many homes.

Tamil Nadu Governor K Rosaiah and Chief Minister Jayalalithaa extended their greetings to people on the occasion.

Soon after assuming office in 2011, the Jayalalithaa government had reversed the previous DMK regime’s decision to change the Tamil new year from the first day of Chithirai (April) to that of ‘Thai’ in January to coincide with the harvest festival Pongal.
