Thiruvananthapuram: Known playback singer K S Chitra is facing a backlash after she made a social media post urging that lamps should be lit in houses and lord Ram hymns should be chanted during the consecration of the Ram temple at Ayodhya on January 22.

The national award winner singer invited criticisms questioning her secular credentials. Many netizens asked her not to forget the history of the temple construction by demolishing the Babri Masjid.

However, Kerala opposition leader V D Satheesan of the Congress and Kerala cultural affairs minister Saji Cheriyan of the CPM backed her. Satheesan said that the right of every one to openly air their opinions should be respected. Cheriyan also said that everyone had freedom of expression. He also pointed out that the temple was constructed with the Supreme Court's nod.

BJP leader and minister of state for external affairs V Muraleedharan asked why the state police was not taking action against the cyber attack on the acclaimed singer. He alleged that those who tried to destroy the traditions of Sabarimala Ayyappa temple were now attacking the singer.
