Smriti Mandhana confirms wedding is called off, urges privacy for both families

Ending weeks of intense speculation and social-media chatter, Indian cricket star Smriti Mandhana on Sunday, December 7, publicly confirmed that her wedding with Palash Muchhal has been called off. In a statement shared on her Instagram Stories, the vice-captain said she felt it was important to address the rumours that had been circulating about her personal life.

“Over the past few weeks there has been plenty of speculation around my life and I feel it is important for me to speak out at this time,” Smriti wrote. Calling herself a private person, she added, “I need to clarify that the wedding is called off.”

Mandhana appealed to fans and the media to allow the matter to rest. “I would like to close this matter here and implore all of you to do the same. I request you to please respect the privacy of both families at this time and allow us the space to process and move on at our own pace.”

Without addressing the rumours directly, the 29-year-old batter said she is choosing to focus on her cricketing ambitions. “I believe there is a higher purpose driving us all and for me that has always been representing my country at the highest level. I hope to continue to play and win trophies for India for as long as possible and that is where my focus will forever be.”

She ended her note thanking supporters and signalling that she is ready to move ahead: “Thank you for all your support. It's time to move forward.”

Mandhana’s statement comes after days of speculation triggered by the postponement of her originally scheduled wedding and the absence of clarity from either family. With this announcement, the cricketer has made it clear she wishes to put the matter behind her.
