<p>Chennai: Keeping up the pressure on the Union Government, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Monday announced that a delegation of MPs from the state would soon meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding that the Delimitation exercise, due in 2026, is implemented in a fair and transparent manner. </p> <p>Making a statement in the Assembly on the first meeting of the JAC on Fair Delimitation here on Saturday which was attended by three Chief Ministers, Stalin reiterated that Southern states shouldn’t be penalized for diligently implementing population control measures. He recalled that Tamil Nadu Assembly was the first to pass a resolution against the Delimitation in February 2024 and said his government will continue its efforts to create an awareness among the public on the crucial issue. </p> <p>Stalin said the all-party meeting chaired by him on March 5 was the precursor to the JAC meeting on Saturday and informed the MLAs that they passed a resolution demanding that the freeze on the number and state-wise distribution of seats in Lok Sabha be extended for another 25 years beyond 2026. </p>.Jagan Mohan Reddy writes to PM Modi: Delimitation must uphold the federal spirit of our democracy.<p>Chief Ministers of Kerala, Telangana, and Punjab – Pinarayi Vijayan, Revanth Reddy, and Bhagwant Mann – and deputy chief minister of Karnataka, D K Shivakumar are among prominent leaders who attended the meeting which also resolved that a delegation of MPs from South India, Odisha, and Punjab will met Modi and submit a representation on the issue.</p> <p>Asserting that Tamil Nadu will fight and win the battle for fair delimitation, Stalin thanked principal Opposition AIADMK and other parties for their support in this regard. </p> <p>“To seek fair delimitation process, a delegation comprising of parties from Tamil Nadu that have representation in Parliament will soon meet Modi and seek justice for our state,” Stalin added. </p><p>Stalin has termed delimitation as a “Damocles Sword” hanging over the heads of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Telangana, which together account for 129 Lok Sabha seats. The states feel that their political representation will reduce if Delimitation is carried out solely on the basis of population, and any such move will only be deemed as a punishment for effectively controlling population. </p><p>The “penalized” feeling isn’t related to Delimitation alone but extends to the devolution of Central taxes, which has been on the downslide in successive Finance Commissions. </p> <p>With just 130 seats across the five states and Puducherry, the South already feels it isn’t able to play a role in the government formation even if it votes en bloc, and these states say it is natural for them to feel threatened over any reduction from the current representation that is already considered low. </p>
