<p>Chennai: After months of confrontation, the management of Samsung India and the employees union at the South Korean firm’s Sriperumbudur plant on Monday reached an agreement on long-term wages and a pact on labour welfare at the behest of the Tamil Nadu government. </p><p>Employees associated with the Samsung India Workers Union (SIWU) and the management of Samsung India have been at loggerheads since September 2024 over a slew of issues. The 37-day strike which began on September 9 over non-recognition of the union by the management ended in October 2024 but the workers went on a strike again in January which came to an end in March 2025. </p>.Language row: Tamil Nadu to move Supreme Court against Centre withholding funds, says Stalin.<p>Industries Minister T R B Raaja said Samsung issue has been fully resolved and that the Tamil Nadu government mediated discussions between management and labourers. </p><p>"Happy to announce that after sustained dialogue and responsible discussions from all sides, all differences pertaining to the Samsung unit have been settled amicably,” Raaja said. </p><p>The agreement was finalised at a meeting chaired by Labour Minister C V Ganesan on Monday during which Samsung agreed to increase the wages of workers by Rs 9,000 in 2025-26, Rs 4,500 each in 2026-27 and in 2027-28. “This will result in an increase of Rs 18,000 in wages in three years,” a statement from the government said. </p><p>Based on the experience levels of the employees, the statement said a special wage increase ranging between Rs 1,000 and Rs 4,000 across three years will also be provided. The statement also said the management will provide air-conditioned buses for employees to reach the factory. </p><p>Reacting to Monday’s development, a Samsung India spokesperson said employee welfare remains a top priority for the company and that they have constructively engaged with all our workers at the Chennai plant and are delighted to announce a mutual agreement to enhance wages and benefits for the next three years. </p><p>“This collaborative approach reflects our unwavering commitment to the well-being of our workers and fostering a stable, harmonious, and forward-looking work environment,” the spokesperson added. </p><p>Notwithstanding the strike, Samsung had in April pledged to invest Rs 1,000 crore to expand its manufacturing unit in Sunguvarchatiram, in what is seen as Samsung’s show of faith in the investment climate and skilled workforce in the state.</p><p>Sources in Samsung India had confirmed the development to DH and said a sizable portion of the fresh investment will go into ramping up headcount at the factory which manufactures home appliances. “The remaining amount will be utilised to expand the factory,” a source said. </p>
