Listen to what he says: “The object of a New Year is not that we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new soul and a new nose; new feet, a new backbone, new ears, and new eyes. Unless a particular man made New Year resolutions, he would make no resolutions. Unless a man starts afresh about things, he will certainly do nothing effective.” That is the Chesterton idea of a new year. </p>.<p>I, for one, agree with Chesterton. December 31 is merely a flip of the calendar. A night melding into a new day, which the calendar decides to call a new year. Chesterton has a point. We need a new/better soul in the new year. A better pair of eyes to see the world’s goodness. A new backbone to stand up for truth. A new nose to sniff evil and thwart its intent. A new pair of feet to walk towards the dreams, towards happiness and compassion. </p>.<p>If Chesterton is not your idea of the new year, there are always pretty dots on the map to make merry. The early-bird-gets-the-worm believer should head to Samoa, Tonga, and Kiritimati (Christmas Island), part of Kiribati, the first places in the world to welcome the new year. If you want to be the last one to ring in the new year, book a ticket to uninhabited US territories like Baker Island and American Samoa. Book a seat in The High Roller observation wheel at The LINQ Promenade, which is 550 feet above the Las Vegas strip. Other fascinating options are Skyfall Lounge on the 64th level of Delano Las Vegas, and Foundation Room on the 63rd floor of Mandalay Bay.
