Mangaluru: As many as 24 complaints were disposed of at Mangaluru City Corporation’s (MCC) water adalat, held after a long gap, on Monday.

The discrepancies in water bills of 24 applicants were addressed, City Corporation Mayor K Bhaskar Moily said.

Though complainants were informed about the date of adalat well in advance, 30 applicants, however, failed to participate in the adalat. In order to set right the lapses in water bills, the MCC will conduct water adalats at regular intervals, the mayor assured.

A majority of the cases were related to faulty water meters. At a few places, the old meters were found to be defunct. The applicants had been asked to replace the meter.

The new meters were available in market for Rs 800 to Rs 1,500. The residents should install ISI-mark meters. After installation, the guarantee card of the meter should be submitted to the City Corporation, for reading the new meter.

Bhaskar Moily said that under Smart City project area development, 800 households had been been identified in eight wards under the MCC for installing smart meters.

Deputy Mayor Mohammed Kunjathbail said, “The City Corporation had proposed to install and maintain new water meters to all the water connections under second phase of ADB-funded project.”

However, the decision is yet to be taken in this regard, he added.

MCC Executive Engineer Linge Gowda said that there are 144 cases related to pending water bills in excess of Rs 1 lakh. The team of engineers had launched the drive to recover pending water bills.

Consumer gets shock of his life

Another consumer said the due showed Rs 150 but the bill he received was for Rs 30,217.
