Metro People: Helping acid attack survivors

Kulsum Shadab Wahab

Kulsum Shadab Wahab spearheads Hothur foundation — an organisation aimed at helping the economically backward by providing education, medical aid and more.

Recently, Kulsum participated at the Milan Fashion Week to feature ‘Ara Lumiere’, a series of accessories by a collective of women acid attack survivors from across India brought together by the foundation. ‘Ara Lumiere’ also won the ‘Camera Moda’ award at the fashion week; it was also a finalist at the FAD X Vogue Italia. Speaking to Metrolife, Kulsum says, “The ethos behind the brand is that incredibly beautiful, precious things can be born from the most difficult conditions. The project produces hair ornaments, helping these women bring hope into their lives.” With Kulsum looking into the design aspect, the foundation had a professional team of people train the survivors for creating the accessories. She says, “I have been working with and empowering acid attack survivors for a while, and I take great pride in showcasing their talent to the world.” She also plans to take her team to Milan for the next season.

Apart from heading the Hothur Foundation, Kulsum also founded ‘Colours of Hope’, an initiative to make a positive difference in the lives of disabled children through expressive art therapies.
