In a shocking incident of cruelty towards animals, 16 puppies were reportedly beaten to death inside the premises of a government hospital in Kolkata. After a video clip of two women beating some of the puppies with iron rods to deaths went viral on social media on Monday, the authorities of the government-run NRS Medical College and Hospital have set up a three-member committee to investigate the matter.

The bodies of the puppies were discovered on inside the hospital premises on Sunday. Police have lodged a suo motu case regarding the incident, which created large scale outrage in Kolkata.

“If any student of NRS is found to be involved in this barbaric act, stringent action will be taken against them. The probing committee will submit its report as soon as possible,” Dwaipayan Biswas, Deputy Superintendent of NRS told DH. Dr Biswas is heading the probing committee.

The video clip shows two women wearing surgical gloves repeatedly hitting a couple of puppies with iron rods. Even as the dogs, squealing in pain, tried to run away, the two kept beating them.

According to a section of the students of the medical college, some food was also found inside the bags where the carcasses of the dogs were kept. “It seems some of the dogs were killed by poisoning,” said a student of the medical college.

The bodies of the dogs have been sent for post mortem.
