Ahmed Patel, political adviser to Congress president Sonia Gandhi,  told party workers on Monday that the 2017 Assembly elections in Gujarat could be their last chance to defeat the BJP in the state.

“If we do not defeat the BJP this time then I do not think we will be able to do so in the coming future,” Patel said at a ‘Jan Vedana Sammelan,’ organised by the Congress at Anand in central Gujarat to highlight the plight of the people post demonetisation.

“Whenever there is an election, eight months or 10 months down the line, you must be prepared. Please forget who is contesting or not. Who has got the ticket or not. When I talk about existence, then I am talking not only about the existence of the Congress but of the state and the country,” said Patel, exhorting cadres to wrest power from the ruling BJP.

“It is important that we win Gujarat because lot is going on in the name of Gujarat. People have reached Delhi in the name of Gujarat,” he added.
