More trouble for Kanhaiya as Bajrang Dal files case

Last Updated 17 October 2018, 06:13 IST

More trouble seems to be brewing for former JNU student leader Kanhaiya Kumar as the Bajrang Dal has lodged an attempt-to-murder case against him at Begusarai in Bihar.

The FIR has been lodged by the convenor of Bajrang Dal, Shubham Bhardwaj, at Bhagwanpur police station in Begusarai district. The self-proclaimed Hindu activist has charged Kanhaiya and his supporters with beating and severely injuring another Bajrang Dal supporter, Sonu, while the student leader was returning to his home after addressing a CPI meet at Mansoorchak in Begusarai on Tuesday evening.

“Kanhaiya has been booked under Section 147, 149, 307, 504, 295 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC),” said Deepak Kumar, Station House Officer (SHO) of Bhagwanpur. He added that since it was a non-bailable offence, Kanhaiya would have to surrender, or else, the police would arrest him.

According to sources, a clash took place between the supporters of Kanhaiya and Bajrang Dal activists near a Durga Temple in which six persons sustained injuries while window panes of Kanhaiya’s cavalcade were damaged.

Later, Kanhaiya, too, lodged a counter-FIR at Barauni police station (12 km from the spot) against members of the Bajrang Dal, charging them with an attempt to murder.

Kanhaiya, who is likely to be the CPI candidate in the next Lok Sabha polls from Begusarai, his hometown, was booked in Patna on Monday for creating ruckus at AIIMS. Kanhaiya had gone there to meet an ailing Sushil, an All India Students’ Federation (AISF) leader, recuperating at AIIMS-Patna after the operation.

The AISF men, who were protesting against the filing of an FIR, later said the fracas at AIIMS broke out after some doctors called Kanhaiya “anti-national”.
