Centre asks AAP to explain overseas funding to it

Stage is set for another round of confrontation between the Centre and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Friday asking the Arvind Kejriwal-led organisation to provide details of its overseas funding.

The AAP said it has "nothing to hide" and would fully cooperate with the officials and agencies but did not hesitate to claim that it was a "clear case of political witch hunt".

Sources in the MHA said the decision to seek details of overseas funding from AAP came as officials felt that it might have violated the provisions of Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) 2010.

In a letter to the party, the MHA has asked AAP to clarify certain donations. Sources said the letter was part of its routine queries to a few political parties regarding funds received from abroad.

"This is not a show cause notice. A decision on sending show cause will be taken only after receiving their response," a senior official said.

Responding to the letter, the AAP said in a statement, "we are ready to face any probe and party will fully cooperate with all concerned officials and agencies."

"It is worth mentioning that the MHA had given us a clean chit before the High Court on this issue and now they are sending us fresh notices. It is a clear case of political witch hunt. All the agencies at Centre's disposal have been unleashed against AAP, its government in Delhi and its ministers, which is very dangerous for democracy," it said.

The Centre and AAP-led Delhi government are at loggerheads over a variety of issues and the AAP accuses the BJP-led government of harassing its leaders.
