The Nisarga cyclone has left a trail of destruction and claimed four lives in Maharashtra.On Wednesday, Nisarga made its landfall off Alibaug coast in Raigad district and then swept through the Pune district's city areas and urban landscape. As on Thursday morning, the cyclone system is over Nashik and North Maharashtra region.

. Over 40,000 people living near the sea coast in Mumbai were shifted to safer places in view of the cyclone 'Nisarga' which made a landfall at Alibaug in neighbouring Raigad district of Maharashtra on Wednesday, officials said.

. Cyclone Nisarga and heavy rain in the Konkan region in Maharashtra has led tothe diversion of four trains of Konkan railway that had commenced journey on Tuesday (June 2).

. Cyclone 'Nisarga' has made landfall near Alibaug on Maharashtra coast with the wind speed of more than 110 kms per hour and heavy rainfall, leading to falling of many trees and electricity poles, a Raigad district official said.

. Landfall process of the cycline storm is over at the Arabian Sea, and there is slight reduction in wind speed. The wind speed is now around 90-100 kmph, according to reports. At the time of landfall in Alibag, the wind speed was 100-110 kmph.

. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport witnessed a runway excursion today with FedEx flight 5033 arriving from Bengaluru. The incident occurred when the MD11 aircraft landed on runway 14/32. The aircraft was towed away from the runway and there has been no disruption in flight operations.

In consultation with AAI, considering the strong crosswinds, it has been decided that no arrivals and departures will take place between 14:30-19:00 hrs.

. Cyclone Nisarga is moving along the predicted path and is expected to make landfall between 2 pm and 4:30 pm on Wednesday around Alibaug in Maharashtra, NDRF chief S N Pradhan said.

The Director General (DG) of the federal contingency force said a total of 43 teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are deployed in the two states of Gujarat and Maharashtra.

. Cyclonic storm Nisarga, set to make landfall at Alibaug in Raigad district in the afternoon, hovered over the Arabian Sea around 165 km south-southwest of the coastal town and 215 km south-southwest of Mumbai at dawn, a senior IMD official said on Wednesday.

. National Disaster Response Force team along with Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, evacuated local residents near the seashore in Versova today to safer places, in view of Cyclone Nisarga.

. As per IMD, there's possibility of 'nature' cyclones/strong winds with rains in BMC area. So, structured inspection of COVID-19 Health Centers set up temporarily at various places in BMC area should be done again by concerned contractors, says Greater Mumbai Municipal Corporation.

Central Railway has rescheduled the following special trains scheduled to leave Mumbai area on 3.6.2020 due to cyclone Nisarg.

• 02542 LTT-Gorakhpur special will leave at 20.00 hrs on 3.6.2020 instead of 11.10 hours

• 06345 LTT-Thiruvananthapuram special will leave at 18.00 hrs on 3.6.2020 instead of 11.40 hours

• 01061 LTT-Darbhanga special will leave at 20.30 hrs on 3.6.2020 instead of 12.15 hours

• 01071 LTT-Varanasi special will leave at 21.00 hrs on 3.6.2020 instead of 12.40 hours

• 01019 CSMT-Bhubaneshwar special will leave at 20.00 hrs instead of 15.05 hours

. Cyclone Nisarga has intensified further, eye diameter has decreased to about 65 km during the past hour. Wind speed has increased from 85-95 kmph to 90-100 kmph, gusting to 110 kmph.

In the wake of Cyclone Nisarga, GVK MIAL that manages the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) will be operating a total of 19 flights which include 11 departures and eight arrivals on June 3. The flights will be operated by five airlines which include Air Asia India, Air India, IndiGo, GoAir and SpiceJet. There could be changes to the schedule and passengers are requested to check the schedule with their respective airline before leaving for the airport.

. Cyclone Nisarga likely to cross south Gujarat Coast today. Evacuation of people from low lying areas to safer locations is underway. The MET department has predicted extremely heavy rainfall with gusty winds in parts of South Gujarat coastal districts.

. Cyclone Nisarga, that could well be one of the worst cyclones to hit the West coast of India, is just around 150 to 160 km off Mumbai. Around noon on Wednesday, the deep depression emanating from the Arabian Sea is expected to make landfall in Alibaug in Raigad district.

. Maharashtra has put in place several measures but keeping its fingers crossed as Cyclone Nisarga is hours away from hitting the coastal Konkan belt. If the cyclonic formation, currently around 400 km deep in the Arabian Sea, goes as forecast by weathermen, it would be the worst-ever in the documented history of Mumbai and the larger Mumbai metropolitan region (MMR). . Cyclone Nisarga is approaching North Maharashtra coast with speed of 11 KMPH. It is about 200 km South-SouthWest of Alibag and about 250 km South-SouthWest of Mumbai at 0230 hours IST of June 3.

. "Cyclonic storm Nisarga is reaching Maharashtra and Gujarat tomorrow. In this difficult time, the whole country stands with you (Maharashtra and Gujarat). Take care. Be vigilant, stay safe," says Rahul Gandhi.

"Tomorrow and day after are important for the coastal strip. It would be advisable to stay at home on both the days. All the factories and businesses that had reopened would remain shut tomorrow and day after," he said.

. "We hope that the intensity of the cyclone reduces but by the looks of it, looking at the possibilities, the Cyclone is going to make landfall along our coast tomorrow afternoon. It’s going to affect most of our coastal strip and the neighbouring regions," says Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray. "We are alert. We’ve directed the Army, Navy, Air force to be alert," he said.

15 NDRF teams and SDRF 4 teams have been deployed wherever needed, he said.

. Mumbai police has issued order under Section 144 of CrPC prohibiting movement of people on beaches, promenades& other places near coast.

. PM Narendra Modi has spoken to CM of Maharashtra Uddhav Thackeray, CM of Gujarat Vijay Rupani and Administrator of Daman Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli Praful K Patel regarding the cyclone situation. He assured all possible support and assistance from the Centre.

The Cyclonic Storm ‘NISARGA’ over East-central Arabian Sea moved northwards with a speed of 13 kmph during past 06 hours, and lay centred at 1430 hours IST of today, the 02nd June, 2020 over East-central Arabian Sea near latitude 16.0°N and longitude 71.2°E, about 290 km west-northwest of Panjim (Goa), 380 km south-southwest of Mumbai (Maharashtra) and 600 km south-southwest of Surat (Gujarat). It is very likely to intensify into a Severe Cyclonic Storm during next 12 hours. . Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday took stock of the situation in the wake of cyclonic conditions in western India.

. The deep depression in the Arabian Sea has intensified into a cyclonic storm and will cross the north Maharashtra and south Gujarat coasts on June 3, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Tuesday.

. As a precautionary measure, state authorities have decided to shift nearly 150 asymptomatic COVID-19 patients from the make-shift set up in BKC area to a facility in Worli, which has a covered rooftop.

. District authorities are surveying the villages and people living in kuchcha houses will be evacuated to safer places. In Mumbai, the municipal authorities have drawn up plans to deal with water logging following heavy rainfall. BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has kept its disaster management control room on high alert. Officials from all 24 wards in Mumbai have been asked to identify potentially hazardous and low lying settlements and evacuate people to nearby safer places.

. Indian Coast Guard ships, aircraft and on shore stations are continuously relaying warnings about impending adverse weather to merchant vessels and fishermen. Meanwhile fishing vessels have begun to return to the shore.

. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed 10 teams at various places in Maharashtra. Anupam Srivastava, Commander, NDRF at Pune said 3 teams have been deployed in Mumbai, 2 each in Raigad and Palghar and 1 each in Thane, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg. NDRF teams have surveyed the region and have been conducting briefing for the people to explain the damage likely to be caused by the cyclone.

. Massive preparations and coordination meetings are underway in the Mumbai metropolitan region with India's financial capital hours away from its worst-ever cyclonic impact. The Cyclone Nisarga is expected to make landfall on Wednesday with wind speed over 105 to 110 kmph.

. According to IMD, Nisarga is very likely to intensify into a Cyclonic Storm during the next six hours and further into a Severe Cyclonic Storm during subsequent 12 hours.

. Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray to chair Cabinet meeting at 3 pm to review the COVID-19 situation and preparations ahead of Cyclone Nisarga.

. The cyclone is expected to make a landfall in Maharashtra's coastal Konkan region,particularly the Palghar district, that comes under the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

According to IMD records, in the last over a century's time, Mumbai and its suburbs, have not experienced such a cyclone.

. Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday reviewed the preparations in Gujarat and Maharashtra for an impending cyclone and assured the chief ministers of the two western states all possible central help to deal with any situation arising out of it.

Aila, Maya, Nargis, Nilofer might sound like the names of people, but they are, in fact, names of lethal cyclones that brought in massive destruction and loss of lives in the regions adjacent to the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea. The naming of cyclones might seem insensitive or juvenile, but the practice of naming cyclones dates back several centuries when cyclones were usually named after Roman Catholic saints. Although cyclones are primarily named to distinguish one cyclone from another, the naming system has always had a pattern to it.

. The nearly 260 km patch between Raigad and Daman has one of the highest population densities in the country. Apart from Mumbai, it also has satellites cities like Thane, Navi-Mumbai, Panvel, Kalyan-Dombivli, Mira-Bhayander, Vasai-Virar, Ulhasnagar, Badlapur and Ambernath.

. The depression will intensify into a deep depression --- the third and fourth stage of any cyclone formation --- by this evening. It will intensify into a cyclonic storm by June 2, the Cyclone Warning Division of the IMD said.

. Meanwhile, on Monday, drizzles were reported from various parts of the Mumbai metropolitan region.

"We have taken all measures. I appeal to fishermen not to venture into the sea," Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said.
