The current monsoon season is likely to be the longest monsoon season over Delhi-NCR since 1941. The previous record of the longest monsoon over Delhi-National Capital Region has been 111 days during 1956.

“In view of predicted rainfall spells over the Delhi-NCR in coming week, the length of the 2013 monsoon is likely to surpass the record since 1941. The length of 2013 monsoon is going to be about 40 per cent more than the normal length,” said Dr O P Singh, Deputy Director General of Meteorology, Regional Meteorological Centre, New Delhi. The normal length of monsoon season over Delhi-NCR last for only 85 days.

This years monsoon was characterised by early onset over north-west India. “It arrived over Delhi on June 16 and rapidly covered entire north-west India on the same day which is an all time record as far as rapid advance of monsoon over the region is concerned,” Singh added.
“In fact a well marked low pressure, which progressed from north-west Bay of Bengal on June 11, rapidly brought the monsoon currents.”
