Fresh snowfall, rains lash Kashmir

Last Updated 20 March 2019, 09:41 IST

People in Kashmir Valley had to bring out their woollens on Wednesday after a fresh spell of moderate snow and rains revived the cold wave.

While Srinagar received slight snowfall, reports of moderate snowfall were received from the famous ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir, south Kashmir tourist resort Pahalgam, border areas of Machil, Gurez, Sadhna Pass and near Jawahar Tunnel on Srinagar-Jammu national highway.

As Srinagar received slight snowfall, icy winds swept Kashmir for whole day. Gulmarg, the major attraction for tourists visiting the Valley during winter witnessed seven inches of fresh snow on W, while its peripheral areas including Kangdoori, Aferwath and Khilanmarg experienced about one feet of snow.

Several roads leading to border areas in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district were closed on Wednesday following fresh snowfall. Reports said that the higher reaches of Kupwara witnessed snowfall from early morning due to which the border roads were closed.

The incessant rains triggered fresh landslides on Srinagar-Jammu national highway, the only surface link of the valley with the rest of India. An official said the traffic movement was suspended due to the landslides.

“Clearance operation is going on. Travellers are advised not to undertake journey before contacting our control rooms in Jammu and Srinagar,” an official said.

The reopening of Sonamarg-Zojilla road, which remains closed since December last year, is likely to get delayed due to heavy snow accumulation, he said.

The road was closed in December last year following heavy snowfall across the region.

The Border Road Organisation started the Zojila opening by March 5. However, the clearance operation is being affected by the heavy accumulation of snow due to avalanches.
