Kerala DGP accused of shielding Nisham

 Kerala government chief whip P C George on Thursday said Director General of Police (DGP) K S Balasubramaniam tried to protect businessman Mohammed Nisham during probe into the murder of a security guard.

George’s statement has further embarrassed the government that is already facing allegations of lapses in the probe.

Nisham had assaulted and tried to run an SUV – a Hummer – over Chandrabose, a security guard at the township he lived in, over a delay in opening a gate. Chandrabose died last month.

George told reporters in Kottayam that he was in possession of evidence that revealed Balasubramaniam’s attempts to influence the probe. Balasubramaniam had ensured that Amal – Nisham’s wife who was reportedly present at the time of the incident – was not interrogated by the police.

“The DGP also had a role in the sacking of former Thrissur police commissioner Jacob Job, an attempt to derail the probe,” George said. Job was suspended over a one-to-one meeting he had with Nisham during the investigation.

“I’ll hand over the evidence to the chief minister and the home minister on Friday,” George said. Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala backed the DGP and reiterated that the probe was in the right direction.
