Left Front ropes in SUCI, CPI-ML

Last Updated 02 November 2014, 20:09 IST

In a move to bring major Left groups into its fold, the Left Front has roped in the Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) and the CPI-ML (Liberation) to initiate a nationwide protests against the government’s economic policies and “communal agenda”.

The events will begin in the second week of December with a week long countrywide protest.

The SUCI and the CPI-ML(Liberation) have been in the past highly critical of Left Front led by the CPM. They have also been confronting the front in elections. However, the ascendance of Narendra Modi as prime minister has forced them to come together.

“With the advent of the Modi government in power there is a concerted right wing offensive fuelled by the corporate-Hindutva forces. There is a growing onslaught on the people through the imposition of neo-liberal policies which is going to adversely impact the livelihood of the people. There is no respite for the people from price rise, unemployment and corruption,” said a joint statement issued by the six parties after their meeting on Saturday.

The meeting was attended by Debabrata Biswas (Forward Bloc),  Kshiti Goswami (Revolutionary Socialist Party), Kavita Krishnan (CPI-ML-Liberation), Manik Mukherjee (SUCI-C), A B Bardhan and D Raja (CPI) and Prakash Karat and  S Ramachandran Pillai (CPM) among others.

The week-long protests from December 8 to 14 will highlight issues like dilution of MNREGA, price rise, rise in price of medicine and drugs, increase in FDI in insurance, black money, infiltration of Hindutva and  RSS ideology in education and media, and  hate campaign in the name of “Love Jihad”.

The CPI-ML (Liberation) has last month initiated another process of uniting Left groups and activists. This process also aims at uniting all those who are opposed the BJP rule and do not wish to join hands with parties like Congress and other regional parties.
