Man shoots daughter dead for talking to boyfriend

In a suspected case of honour killing, a man reportedly shot dead his teenage daughter while she was talking to her boyfriend.

The incident occurred in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao district, about 60 kilometre from Lucknow.

According to police sources in Lucknow, a 17-year-old girl, a resident of Fatehpur Chaurasi area in the district, was shot at twice from behind on late Thursday night.

Police said that the victim had been having an affair with a boy, who lived in the same village, for the past few months.

''The father suspected that the girl spoke with her lover at nights and had been keeping an eye on her... He had also warned her daughter about the relationship and asked her to sever all ties with the boy,'' a police official in Unnao said.

When the man found his daughter speaking to her boyfriend over phone, in a fit of rage, he shot at her.

The accused was arrested and the country made pistol form which he had fired at the girl has also been recovered, police said.

Some others have also been detained on suspicion of trying to destroy evidence from the crime scene.

Earlier also, several girls have been killed for falling in love or marrying against their family's wishes, especially in the 'Jat' dominated western region of the state.

The powerful 'khaps' (caste panchayats) have already declared that they will not allow love marriages or marriages against family wishes.
