Mehbooba reviews security situation in J&K ahead of PM's visit

Close on the heels of a call for a unilateral ceasefire, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday reviewed the overall security situation in the state at a meeting of the Unified Headquarters.

Sources said frequent civilian killings, infiltration and security arrangements for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Kashmir on May 19 were discussed during the meeting. The meeting which took place at SKICC on the banks of famous Dal Lake comes in the backdrop of rising number of civilian causalities during clashes with security forces.
The UHQ is the apex decision-making body on security affairs in the state which has the representatives from the army, paramilitary forces, police and intelligence agencies and is headed by the chief minister.
“The Unified Headquarters discussed roadmap ahead of summer to ensure arrival of the tourists, peaceful Ramazan and 60-day long Amarnath pilgrimage, which would start from June 28,” they said. “Top officers and heads of various security agencies gave their detailed analysis on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir including internal security and the situation prevailing along the borders.”
Mehbooba advised the security agencies to ensure safety and security of public and their properties, an official spokesperson said.
Deputy Chief Minister, Kavinder Gupta was also present at the meeting. The chief minister underscored the need for engaging meaningfully with the people, particularly youth so that they are able to gainfully contribute to the society. She stressed on increased community policing activities and enhanced outreach by the administration.
