A family of three was found strangled in their third-floor residence in Old Rajinder Nagar of Central New Delhi, the police said.

The deceased were identified as Sanjay, 50, a Delhi government employee, his wife Jyoti, 48, and son Pawan, 21.

The police suspect that the murders were committed on Saturday night by someone known to the family. “The family of the three was strangled and it seems that the crime had been committed on Saturday evening. Every angle of our suspicion will be worked upon and an investigation is underway,” said Joint Commissioner (Central Range) S K Gautam.

The incident came to light on Sunday morning when the domestic help of the family entered their house and found Jyoti lying unconscious on her bed while Pawan was lying on the floor.

After entering the room, the helper was taken aback seeing the scene at the house. She immediately informed one of the neighbours of the family, who called the police around 10:30 am, following which a police team rushed to the spot.

Prima facie it was suspected that Sanjay was behind the crime as he could not be found near the crime spot. However, the suspicion was negated when the police team found Sanjay’s body stuffed in a cupboard of his bedroom.

“All the three were strangled,” said a senior police officer.  According to police officials, the entire house was ransacked.Though the accused are yet to be identified, the police haven’t ruled out possibility of property dispute as a motive behind the incident.

Some neighbours had claimed that Sanjay had some property disputes with his relatives as his father had made Jyoti the owner of his entire property following which other family members had tensions with the trio. The bodies of the three deceased were sent for post-mortem after which they will be handed over to the family members.

Sanjay was working with the Sales Tax department of the Delhi government and was also running a property business while Pawan was studying in Maharaja Agrasen Institute of Technology and was in his third year of mechanical Engineering. Jyoti was a homemaker.
