Delhi on Wednesday got a Mayor two and half months after municipal polls with AAP's Shelly Oberoi convincingly defeating BJP's Rekha Gupta.

Oberoi, a 39-year-old former assistant professor, gathered 150 votes while Gupta managed 116 votes. She will be the first Mayor of the re-unified Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

AAP got all 150 votes -- 134 councillors, 13 MLAs and 3 MPs -- while BJP got 116, including seven MPs. The BJP is also believed to have got votes of three independents and one Congress councillor while eight others abstained from voting.

Earlier three attempts to get Mayor elected ended in a stalemate following ruckus during the proceedings. BJP had been insisting that ten nominated members be allowed to vote but it was turned down by Supreme Court last week turned down the plea, setting the stage for the conduct of Mayoral polls finally.

Oberoi said, "I thank CM Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and the people of Delhi. In the next three days, we will visit landfill sites. All councillors will work from today only. The 10-guarantee programme will be our focus. The deputy mayor and standing committee elections will be held today itself. I also want to thank the judiciary."

AAP supremo and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted, "the goons lost, the public won. In the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the people of Delhi won and hooliganism was defeated. Congratulations to the people of Delhi on Shelly Oberoi being elected mayor." Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia also echoed Kejriwal and said, "many congratulations to all the workers as AAP candidate has become the mayor in Municipal Corporation of Delhi. Once again whole hearted gratitude to the people of Delhi. Many many congratulations to the first Mayor of AAP."

Amid claims that one Congress councillor had voted for the BJP, Delhi Congress president Anil Chaudhary said one of their councillors had participated in the voting though the party had decided to abstain from voting.

In the municipal polls held in December last year, AAP had won 134 wards while BJP won 104 and Congress nine. Three were won by independents.
