Andhra Pradesh has on Friday reported its first COID-19 death of a 55-year-old who acquired the virus from his Delhi Markaz returned son.

As on Friday evening, the state has a total of 161 positive cases. 140 of these cases are related to the Nizamuddin event.

According to Dr Arja Srikanth, state COVID-19 nodal officer, the death occurred on March 30 within an hour of the person with diabetes, hypertension, etc., conditions brought to the Vijayawada general hospital in a critical condition.

“The death occurred after we took his swab samples. His son, who returned from Delhi on 17 March also tested positive. He would have infected his father,” the official said.

“The delay in the announcement is because we wanted to ascertain the cause as COVID-19 positive.”

The family is from the Kummaripalem area of Vijayawada. 29 contacts are identified and sent to quarantine.

The details of the flight the son travelled from Delhi to Vijayawada is shared with the central government, Dr Srikanth told DH.

Following the announcement of the state’s first death, Chief Minister Jaganmohan Reddy held a review meeting and instructed officials to strictly implement all the COVID-19 guidelines “keeping in view the sudden hike in cases after the return of attendees of the Tablighi Jamaat.”

A total of 1085 people attended the event and 946 among them are now in AP whose samples are collected and tests conducted.

“Results are out for 881 samples where 108 samples detected positive and 65 test reports are yet to come. About 626 members who came in contact with the event attendees were also tested and 32 among them were detected positive and 335 test reports are yet to come,” said officials.
