Tight security around Parliament during debate

Last Updated 18 February 2014, 22:38 IST

Over a dozen scribes inside and around 50 policemen outside: The scene at Constitution Club, where Telugu Desam Party chief N Chandrababu Naidu addressed a press conference on Tuesday morning, spelt the government's over-cautious approach on the Telangana issue.

As Naidu urged BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi to “use his good offices” to keep Andhra Pradesh united till an amicable solution is reached on the issue of creation of a separate Telangana state, policemen kept a hawk's-eye vigil outside the venue to thwart any unruly incident. Constitution Club is a stone's throw away from the Parliament House.

The scene around the Parliament House was similar. Every approach road to the Parliament House complex had heavy police presence, with everyone moving towards Parliament being stopped at police pickets. All were checked for identity cards, and those without one had to simply walk back, as policemen turned a deaf ear to their pleas.

Overzealous policemen also stopped newspaper journalists to ask for identity cards. “Where is your camera?” a reporter of a newspaper was asked.
