Trinamool Congress set to take action against Mukul

Last Updated 10 March 2015, 20:43 IST

In what could be the final move to weed out Mukul Roy from the Trinamool Congress, the party is gearing up to take disciplinary action against the shunted leader.

While Roy’s formal exit from the party may be a matter of days, Trinamool leaders are likely to prepare the grounds for an ignominious departure for him, given his actions and words in the last few days.

According to sources, Chief Minister and party chairperson Mamata Banerjee has already entrusted the job to Derek O’Brien, leader of the Trinamool Parliamentary Party, to prepare a dossier on whatever Roy has said before the media in the last couple of months after the CBI interrogated him in the Saradha chit fund scam.

Sources said that the party supremo is all for taking disciplinary action against Roy and throwing him out.

“It’s a matter of days. The ground is being prepared. Mukul Roy has to go and the path is being cleared. If he had kept quite and did not sound like siding with the BJP, may be he would have been allowed to resign with dignity. Now it seems the Trinamool chairperson has decided to humiliate him before asking him to leave,” a senior leader said.

He added that Roy’s son Subhranshu could also be asked to leave along with others who have openly spoken in favour of Roy.

Insiders admitted that the process could take some time and Mamata is working out the pros and cons since Roy has been her second-in-command for many years and knows the internal workings of the party, including some unsavoury facts.

“It’s true that Roy has been instrumental in helping Didi to build the party to its current entity. Since he knows a lot of internal things, the idea is to plug the loopholes before he gets a chance to take advantage,” another senior leader pointed out.  He also said action against Roy and his son is likely to be taken after the municipal polls in April.
