As Covid-19 cases surge across Maharashtra, the total number of active cases have crossed the 60,000 mark with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and urban conglomerates accounting for the majority of the cases.

On Friday morning, the total progressive cases and deaths stood at 21,29,821 and 51,993, respectively, while the total number of active cases in the state were 64,290.

So far, 1,60,26,587 tests have been done of which nearly 13.39 per cent or 21,29,821 have tested positive. The case fatality rate was 2.44 per cent.

According to officials of the Maharashtra government’s Public Health Department and the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation, in the past four to five days, the number of tests has increased as more cases have been reported.

The total active cases in the urban conglomerates of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Pune, Nashik, Aurangabad, Nagpur and Amravati was 45,698. “Majority of the cases are in urban centres. We have been witnessing a surge in Amravati but cases have shot up even in Nashik,” points out Dr Suhas Pingle, chairman, Action Committee, IMA-Maharashtra.

If one takes into account the golden triangle of Mumbai-Pune-Nashik, the total active cases were 29,098. The Pune district has the highest number of active cases 11,570, followed by Nagpur (8,312), Amravati (6,646), Nashik (2,127) and Aurangabad (1,852).

The MMR that accounts for the twin districts of Mumbai City and Mumbai Suburban and large parts of neighbouring Thane, Palghar and Raigad districts – account for the lion’s share of 15,391 active cases of the state’s tally.

If one compares the position one month ago, on January 26, the state had a total of 43,811 active cases, as against 64,260 on February 26. “In a month’s time, active cases have gone by 20,000-plus. One of the main reasons is people’s attitude towards the masks, public gatherings, marriage events, political events,” officials said.
