A slight delay in serving food at a wedding ceremony cost a youth his life after some enraged diners reportedly battered him to death in Uttar Pradesh's Ballia district, about 400 km from here.

According to police sources here, the incident occurred at a wedding function at Bikrampur Paschim village in the district late on Sunday night. One person has been arrested in this connection.

Sources said the trouble started when some guests from the bride's side, who hailed from the Yadav community, were told to wait for some time for their dinner owing to the shortage of the plates.

Irked over the delay, they clashed with the hosts. One of the youths, identified as Vishal Patel, was hit repeatedly with sticks and lathis inflicting serious injuries on him. Around a dozen others were injured in the clash.

Vishal was rushed to the district hospital from where he was referred to Varanasi after his condition worsened. He succumbed to his injuries on way to the hospital there, sources said.

As the clashes involved members of two different castes, it triggered tension in the locality with members of the Patel community demanding arrest of the accused persons.

Police said that one of the accused, identified as Arjun Yadav, was arrested and a massive hunt had been launched to nab the other accused.

Security personnel in strength had been deployed at the village to maintain order, the officials said, adding that senior police officers were present at the village and monitoring the situation.
