Additional facilities, like a cold storage unit, a bio digester, STP and rooftop solar panels have been included in the concept plan of the new Central Market. The present Central Market will be demolished to build a new market under Smart City Project.

Speaking at a meeting with traders chaired by Minister for Urban Development U T Khader, the consultant of the project said that according to the plan, it has been proposed to provide parking facilities for the 583 cars and 146 two-wheelers.

The consultant said that provision has been made for 596 shops in the market.

MCC Commissioner Mohammed Nazeer, who is also the MD of Mangaluru Smart City Ltd, said that technical experts from Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation are reviewing the project. Later, a high-powered committee of the government will give its approval for the project, he added.

The minister urged the traders to cooperate in making the project a reality.

Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil said the traders will have to temporarily rehabilitated while taking up the work on the new market. The traders will be consulted before finalising the temporary market venue, he said.
