WhatsApp to bring instant disappearing photos, videos feature soon

Last Updated 04 March 2021, 07:07 IST

In late 2020, WhatsApp released a new update with disappearing messages feature. This allowed the sender to set an auto-delete timer for a message. After the message reaches the receiver's phone, it automatically vanishes from the chat session.

This applied to both text message and multimedia content- photos and video. However, the timer has only one option-- seven days. Many users felt one-week timer is too long and doesn't serve the purpose of sharing any sensitive information or personal photographs, which require to be deleted in a few minutes.

Now, it looks like, WhatsApp has finally heard the prayers. In the latest Android WhatsApp beta version, the company has introduced a dedicated sky blue-hued button right beside the multimedia upload '+' icon. Once activated, the media (photo or video) will instantly get deleted once the receiver moves out of the chat session, reports WABetaInfo, a WhatsApp developer community.

With WhatsApp getting panned for the flawed user privacy policy, this new feature is certainly appealing enough to make people, particularly those sitting on the fence about whether to move to the other messenger app or not, stay back.

For now, the instant disappearing media feature is still under testing and is expected to be tested on iOS and after weeding out bugs, it will be rolled out to the public in the coming months.
