Kerala emerge champions

Mandeep Goyat, Jessy Joseph power to easy wins in 800M

 Mandeep Goyat and Jessy Joseph powered to convincing victories in the 800M while Kerala regained the overall championship after a year’s gap in the ninth National Youth Athletics Championships on Sunday.

Goyat, the defending champion, timed 1:52.66 to erase the time of 1:53.08 set by Pankaj Dimri in 2008 for a national record, finishing ahead of Delhi’s Arjun Khokhar and Gurjant Singh of Punjab.


Jessy, a trainee of P T Usha, was miles ahead of her rivals as she clocked 2:10.72, a meet record, to defend the gold she won in Ranchi last year. The old record of 2:11.30 stood in the name of  Jhuma Khatun.


Kerala won the overall championships with a tally of 216 points while Haryana, last year’s champions, finished second with 125.5 points. Kerala also swept the boys’ and girls’ team titles while Karnataka, who failed to win a gold on the final day, was second in the girls section.


Maharashtra’s Satish Pasale, who won the boys’ 400M hurdles, and Dutee Chand, winner of the 100-200M double in the girls section, were adjudged the best athletes.
