Kerala emerge champions

Mandeep Goyat and Jessy Joseph powered to convincing victories in the 800M while Kerala regained the overall championship after a year’s gap in the ninth National Youth Athletics Championships on Sunday.

Goyat, the defending champion, timed 1:52.66 to erase the time of 1:53.08 set by Pankaj Dimri in 2008 for a national record, finishing ahead of Delhi’s Arjun Khokhar and Gurjant Singh of Punjab.

Jessy, a trainee of P T Usha, was miles ahead of her rivals as she clocked 2:10.72, a meet record, to defend the gold she won in Ranchi last year. The old record of 2:11.30 stood in the name of  Jhuma Khatun.

Kerala won the overall championships with a tally of 216 points while Haryana, last year’s champions, finished second with 125.5 points. Kerala also swept the boys’ and girls’ team titles while Karnataka, who failed to win a gold on the final day, was second in the girls section.

Maharashtra’s Satish Pasale, who won the boys’ 400M hurdles, and Dutee Chand, winner of the 100-200M double in the girls section, were adjudged the best athletes.
