Bantwal police foiled a dacoity attempted and arrested three men in that connection on Thursday night. The trio also attempted to assault police personnel who tried to stop their car at Manihalla Junction.

According to Superintendent of Police Dr B R Ravikanthe Gowda, the police fired at them when they attempted to assault policemen.

Those arrested are Mohammed Muksin (23), Mohammed Irshad (29) and Saddam Maripalla.

The police have seized their car, talwars, iron rods, chilly powder, monkey caps and other paraphernalia from the accused.

Police said that the three accused were at Gerukatte in Belthangady taluk on Thursday night. When the locals raised the alarm, they fled the spot. Later, one local resident called the police who swung into action and set up check points.

The police set up nakabandis at Guruvayanakere, Manihalla, Poonjalkatte and Madhwa. When the police constable Adarsha and home guard Bhaskar tried to stop the car of the accused at Madhwa, the trio jumped the check point and drove towards B C Road. A police team chased their car.

When the policemen at Manihalla Junction tried to stop them, the accused tried to crash through the nakabandi and assault the policemen with iron rods and swords. Bantwal PSI Chandrashekar and Bantwal Rural PSI Prasanna fired at the car.

When the accused tried to race towards Navoor, their car got struck in a drain. Two of the suspects in the car fled the spot. The police were successful in arresting the other three.

During the interrogation, they revealed that they had conspired a dacoity and also wanted to steal cattle.

Of the arrested, Muksin has more than 14 cases against him in Surathkal and other police stations. There are murder and attempt-to-murder cases against Saddam in Bantwal Police Station.

The police registered a case under IPC Section 307, 353, 399 and 402 against the trio.
