BJP’s D K Chavan, a three-time corporator, became the 38th mayor of Hubballi-Dharwad, defeating Congress candidate Dasharath Wali by eight votes.
In the mayoral polls for the fourth tenure held here on Saturday, Chavan bagged 41 votes, while Wali got 33. For the deputy mayor’s post, Laxmibai Bijawad trumped Congress’ Suvarna Kallakuntla with the same margin.
The mayor’s post was earmarked for the OBC 2A category this year, while the deputy mayor’s post for the SC woman category. Of the 76 voters, including 67 corporators, 74 were present. Regional Commissioner N Jayaram conducted the election proceedings.
