<p>Nearly half a dozen patients received a fresh lease of life after the organs of a brain-dead man were harvested at A J Hospital and Research Centre in the wee hours of Thursday.</p>.<p class="bodytext">Harinaksha M, 32, was serving as a bus conductor and hailed from Mangilapadavu near Vittla in Bantwal taluk. He was admitted to A J Hospital with serious injuries sustained in a bike accident on December 31 around 10.30 am. Having sustained serious head injuries, he was declared brain-dead on January 2. After obtaining the consent of his family members, a team of experts at A J Hospital and Research Centre, harvested the dead man’s organs. Harinaksha’s liver and heart valves were taken to Manipal Hospital in Bengaluru, one kidney to KMC hospital in Mangaluru, corneas to A J Hospital and another kidney was transplanted at A J Hospital according to the directives of Zonal Coordination Committee of Karnataka (ZCCK) for Organ Transplantation, A J Hospital and Research Centre Medical Director and Transplant Surgeon Dr Prashanth Marla K stated in a press release.</p>.<p class="bodytext">The liver and heart valves were transported to Bengaluru in a flight from Mangalore International Airport at around 7.30 am. Harinaksha is survived by his father, an agriculturist, mother and five siblings.</p>
