Cine actors Kishore and Roopa Iyer joined hands with the local populace in desilting the Sulekere (Shanti Sagara) lake in Chennagiri taluk, Chitradurga district, on Monday.

The actors who paid a surprise visit to the Saddharma Nyayapeetha run by Shivamurthy Shivacharya, seer of the Sirigere Taralabalu mutt, drew his attention to the pathetic condition of Shanti Sagara --which is dubbed as Asia's second largest lake.

"Asia's second largest lake is filled with silt. Several encroachments around the lake have ruined its original beauty. There is a dire need to desilt the lake and clear encroachments," actor Kishore told reporters.

"It is a noble cause. Water is essential to all. As the youth organisation has come forward to desilt and restore the lake to its original condition; I am glad to join them," said actor Roopa Iyer.

The Swamiji said that the mutt would wholly support the cause of lake restoration and cautioned that the initiative should not be in any way politicised. "Be politically neutral in this effort," he advised youth.
